College Level Global Finals 2000

RESULTS

 Notes from the webmaster:

Destination ImagiNation Global Finals were held in Ames, Iowa at ISU,  May 24- 27th. This year's finals were a wonderful celebration of creativity- with 764 teams in attendance, representing 54 different states, provinces and countries-Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Guatemala, Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the United States. That's over 15,000 participants including 8,000 kids and an additional 7,000 people including supporters, parents, officials and other guests! In addition there were 400 judges and officials running the events. D2K was without a question a well run tournament filled to the brim with fun and creativity.

Twenty three college level teams competed and most stayed in Friley Hall on campus. We all had a lot of fun (if NO sleep) at the dorm!  The food was actually fairly decent for a change and vegetarian diet concerns were addressed.  Beginning of the week saw the usual mad scramble to finish up our solutions- the sounds of hammers, screwdrivers, and leaf blowers resounded throughout the halls, and the scent of glues was ever- present. Loans of tools and glues etc were exchanged as new friendships were forged. Thursday night, most of the college groups passed on  the Christian Davis concert in order to do final refinements to their presentations and solutions. Later that evening, the  TMs for Illinois and Guatemala Pasta hosted an IC workshop with a focus on improv that was attended by about 30 kids. One of the most appreciated improvs appeared to be the one where Guatemala had to use duct tape to  make a team member "sexy".  Friday night the Colorado FRC team hosted a dance in the basement with a DJ.  Saturday afternoon a large number of team members attended the College Level meeting hosted by Sue Welsch to discuss our concerns and issues and to plan for the coming year. It appears most teams would like to have alternative evening activities planned for the college teams- like a mixer with a "talent show" or "A Night at the Improv" theme.  Of the those attending, it appeared the majority had volunteered at their regional or state levels to judge or officiate in some way, giving back to the OM/DI program -as only experienced creative problem solvers could do! A more complete record of the meeting will be published soon. Watch for it!

It was clear from the many comments shared at the tournament by spectators and officials alike,  that the college level presentations were outstanding this year. Many teams reported standing ovations -and attendance at our performances was SRO in most cases! Local TV Channel 8 News ran a feature from D2K that included the weight placement and structure breaking of the  Illinois Pasta team plus an interview.

College scores compared VERY favorably with the best of the other levels- as a matter of fact, the  Pasta, FRC, MA & O , and Music Challenges' first place scores were highest of all levels and of the other two remaining challenges-College Eggs tied with the Intermediate level with a 400.00 ((perfect score) ! ) and Instant Pudding was right there with the Intermediate level who outscored them by only 1.76 points overall.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE TEAMS WHO CAME TO COMPETE!
